“Give thanks to the LORD, for He is good; His love endures forever.”
Psalm 118:1 NIV

THANKSGIVING - - a time when we as Christians, purposefully set aside time to thank our Heavenly Father for His many blessings He has given to us. First of all, let me wish all my Canadian friends & family a happy Thanksgiving weekend. We truly have a lot to be thankful for!

Psalm 118:1 has been made into a well-known worship song, ‘Forever’, by Chris Tomlin. The song reminds us that God’s love endures forever. We need to praise Him and thank Him daily, not just at times like Easter, Christmas or Thanksgiving. ‘Forever God is faithful, forever God is strong; forever God is with us, forever and ever.’ He promised us that He would never leave us or forsake us, and we need to take Him at His word. That is a pressing issue that is going to be repeated many times, until we actually walk in that truth.

Taken from a message I heard, “We should be thankful not only for the external, but for the eternal.” If you died tonight, are you 100% sure that you are going to Heaven? 1 John 5:12-13 says, “He who has the Son has life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life. I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life.” We need to thank God for His eternal blessings as well. The life we have here on earth is great, with all the blessings we receive daily, however the blessings we will receive when we get to Heaven will be even greater. In the words of another song, by Mercy Me, ‘I can only imagine what it will be like”. Heaven is our eternal reward.

Thankfulness comes from the heart, and we need to be thankful for even the little things. In a Veggie Tales movie, ‘Madame Blueberry’, Madame Blueberry wants more and more things, and she is never happy. She covets the things that her friends and neighbours have, and always wants more. One day a new store moves into the neighbourhood called the Stuff-Mart. To make a long story short, she sees a little girl having a picnic with her family, and they don’t have very much. The little girl sings a song about thankfulness, and she thanks God for the sun in the sky, her piece of apple pie, the love that they share, that He listens to her prayers, and that’s why she gives thanks everyday. Madame Blueberry learns the hard way that it’s not the things she owns that are important, it’s the love that God has for her, and the love she can share with others.

What does a person look like with a heart of T.H.A.N.K.S.G.I.V.I.N.G.? Taking each letter of THANKSGIVING, come up with one or more words that describe someone with a thankful heart. I made up this list below and I’m sure there are lots of words that you could come up with on your own; why not try it?

T - - Thankfulness (of course)
H - - Humble
A - - Adoration for the Father
N - - Neighbourly & hospitable
K - - Kindness to others, including enemies
S - - Servantheart
G - - Giving of yourself, physically, & financially
I - - Investing in others
V - - Visionary (without a vision, people perish)
I - - Ignoring other’s faults
N - - Not sweating the small stuff
G - - Growing daily in the Lord

PRAYER: Lord, we thank You and thank You over and over this Thanksgiving weekend for our daily blessings. Help us not to forget to be thankful, and not to take You for granted. Teach us how to have a heart of thanksgiving, so that we may truly live a thankful life. I pray special blessings on my Canadian friends as they join together with their families and friends this Thanksgiving. Give us safe travelling mercies, and a blessed time together. Thank You Lord for my family and friends, and for the many many blessings that You have given to me. Thank You God for sending Your one and only Son to die for us, and for raising Him from the dead to live again so that we may live. We bless you and honour You this day and forever. I love you Lord. In Jesus’ precious name, AMEN.
