As a childcare worker (a Registered Early Childhood Educator, not a babysitter) & someone involved in Children's Ministry (KidMin), I find myself in the presence of young children frequently. I am a Toddler teacher in my M-F job, and there I teach little minds more about themselves and the world around them. Thankfully, it is also based in my church, so we teach them spiritual truths too!
We are blessed to have our childcare in our church building, as the presence of God follows us up to the 2nd floor where the main part of the childcare is. There are a couple sets of stairs that we have to take daily, either to get outside, or to get to the 'gym'. Some of the Toddlers can do the stairs with ease, some still hesitate and take them slow, whereas some have difficulty & like to hold hands with the educator. On one occasion, last week, a thought came to me inspired by Holy Spirit. The Toddlers can do it on their own, and like to use autonomy and say "I do it!" So we let them hold the railing and walk down the stairs without assistance. But on this day, a little boy was going slow and taking small steps, so I offered him my hand, and he confidently took off down the stairs with a spring in his step and he even jumped from the bottom step to the landing. I reached for the hand of a child behind him, and the same thing transpired. A confidence was built. They put their trust in me, and when they took my hand, they had no fear. They trusted that I would help them down the stairs and not let go. Holy Spirit showed me this is the same with our walk with God. God allows us to 'walk unassisted', but He is still right there with us. But when we allow Him to hold our hand, we can go forth confidently with no fear!
This led me on a verse search, and I came across one found in Isaiah 41:13 "For I hold you by your right hand -- I, the Lord your God. And I say to you, 'Don't be afraid. I am here to help you'."
Such a simple but true promise that removes fear and brings confidence! If God is holding our hand, nothing can snatch us from His grip.
That leads to the story that I have shared here before... except earlier the lesson had a father and daughter/son, this one has a mom and son.
If we hold onto God, challenges come and we might let go, but if God holds onto us, there will be nothing that can separate us.

TRAIN or TURN? -- January 16th, 2010

The verb “train” in this sentence means (according to dictionary.com);
To develop or form the habits, thoughts or behaviour of (a child or other person) by discipline and instruction; to make proficient by instruction and practice, as in some art, profession or work; to make (a person) fit by proper exercise, diet, practice, etc., as for an athletic performance; to discipline and instruct (an animal), as in the performance of tasks or tricks; to treat or manipulate so as to bring into some desired form, position, direction, etc; [horticulture] to bring (a plant, branch, etc) into a particular shape or position, by bending, pruning or the like; to bring to bear on some object; point, aim, or direct as a firearm, camera, telescope or eye; to entice, allure.
WOW! Training a child can be a difficult task. Think of all the things that they need training for, toilet training, training to walk, training to read, etc. They do not however need training to CRY. One of the first things that babies can and will do by themselves is to CRY. It is the easiest thing to do.
(Editor’s SideNote: *This devotional was going to be about training our children, so that they will not turn, however it is also taking a new direction thanks to the Holy Spirit. We need to teach ourselves, and our children to cry out once again!*)
Why is CRYING so hard for us to do as adults? CRYING itself is seen as a form of weakness. CRYING OUT to God is what He desires. We need to listen to the Father’s heart, and CRY out to Him for what we desire, but also for what He desires for us. We need to train our children to cry out for what they need. Unfortunately, we learn its not okay to cry. When there are babies crying in their cribs, crying and crying, as parents/caregivers we are taught time and again to ignore them, and they will eventually stop. Why do WE get so frustrated when we cry out, and think that God is not listening or acting on our behalf? God our Father does not ignore our cries, he bottles our tears. He hears our cries, and responds accordingly. We can always CRY out to Him! Lord we cry out for Your Grace and Mercy and Love!
The Bible has been translated many times since it was first written and inspired of the Lord. When things get translated, and re-worded many times sometimes they lose their original meaning, as in the infamous ‘Telephone Game’. In the MESSAGE, which I do like because it is in ‘readable and understandable’ English, this verse takes on a whole new meaning. It says, “Point your kids in the right direction— when they're old they won't be lost.” This version is the one I believe that some (a high percentage unfortunately) are following. There is a BIG difference between ‘pointing your kids in the right direction’ and ‘training your kids in the way they should go’. If you are put in charge of a heavy piece of machinery for example, would you want someone just to point the way that you should go, or would you actually like them to train you and show you how to use it?
Pointing the way to go, may seem helpful at the time, in the sense of the times when you ask people for directions to a place. But pointing is not really helpful, especially if you have no knowledge of the places you will be going, or even passing by for that matter. For me, giving directions and I don’t get along too well. I use LANDMARKS instead of street names most times. I do know the street names, but sometimes I cannot picture the intersection for example, unless you use a landmark. McDonalds, Malls/Plazas, etc… are good landmarks for me to know where you are talking about. North, South, East and West have no bearing for me either. (no pun intended). This is the same with children, or other people (for that matter). They have to have prior knowledge of the ‘area’ or even better, have a MAP to the places they are going. If you have a MAP or directions written down you can find the ‘place you want to go’ easier, and you have less of a chance of getting lost. Sooner or later, you will have ‘memorized’ the map and the directions, and it will be common knowledge, so that you can know go to the places you need to go.
Such is the life of a CHRISTIAN… a true Christ follower. On our own, we are left to be pointed the direction to go. We are given two directions… one leads to life, and one to death. Obviously any right-minded person would choose life, however unfortunately most don’t. We are given the options, but truly have no knowledge of either place. THE BIBLE is the MAP that has been given to EVERYONE (not just Christians), because we all were LOST. (Romans 3:23 –“For all have sinned, and fall short of the glory of God.") But Christians (true Christians) are the ones that choose to follow the map’s directions, and are no longer LOST. (“In the same way your Father in heaven is not willing that any of these little ones should be lost.” –Read Matthew 18:12-14.) They ‘memorize’ the Scriptures and ‘directions’ in the map, and soon it becomes common knowledge in their physical mind and spirit. They now know which path to follow, and how to get there. Unfortunately, for us, the path to follow is a difficult one, and the other path looks oh so easy and more fun.
This is a lesson that needs to be TRAINED in people both young and old. However, if you train your children when they are young, they will hold on to what they know, and it will become common knowledge as was said above. They choose the path they wish to take, not just by us pointing the direction, but by us coming alongside them training them in the ways of the Lord. We need to come alongside any and everyone, physical children, and spiritual children.
The first definition of ‘train’ above says, “To develop or form the habits, thoughts or behaviour of (a child or other person) by discipline and instruction.” Our habits, thoughts and behaviours DEVELOP. Developing is a process. It doesn’t just happen. As I said in the beginning, training is a difficult task. Using the example of photography, a photographer isn’t just going to develop his film by ‘pointing’ the film to the developing room. He has to physically walk with it, and put it in the solution, and WAIT. Waiting is something that we as 21st century adults have no time for. However, I want to make the point that we have no time to WASTE.
Our children need us. [For future reference, when I use the word ‘children’ it can mean both ‘physical children’(those age 0-17) or ‘spiritual children’ (those who are babies in the faith and also those who you have taken under your wing.)] This is why such things as mentoring are important, but also why Sunday School, and Saturday/Sunday services should be an important part in the lives of our ‘Children’. These are places where are children are equipped and trained.
Too many times our children are ‘pointed’ in the way to go, or they are unfortunately ‘trained’ in the wrong sense of the word. So many children have been trained according to some of the definitions above, “to discipline and instruct (an animal), as in the performance of tasks or tricks; to treat or manipulate so as to bring into some desired form, position, direction, etc”. Some of our children have been manipulated or treated as animals and this is NOT how they should be treated. However, because of this we need to gain their faith and trust back, so we must assume caution when dealing with them.
One of the best definitions of ‘train’ is regarding horticulture, and you may think that has nothing to do with training children, but it certainly does. The definition states, “to bring (a plant, branch, etc) into a particular shape or position, by bending, pruning or the like.” In the Bible, we are likened unto branches. Jesus tells us in John 15 verses 1-8, “I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes so that it will be even more fruitful. You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you. Remain in me, and I will remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me. I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. If anyone does not remain in me, he is like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned. If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be given you. This is to my Father's glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples.” The Father prunes us like branches, training us in His ways. We are trained through this pruning, and bending. He stretches us in ways we will and can not even imagine. Which we really shouldn’t be shocked about, because in Ephesians 3:20 it states, “Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us.” The Father knows what is best for us, and just like our physical parents He disciplines us and trains us for the work that He has for us to accomplish. BUT, we need to be trained to follow His ways, before He can and will direct and lead us in our lives. If we do trust in Him and come to the ‘COMMON KNOWLEDGE” of His map and ways, He will in fact lead and direct our path in ways to righteousness. (Proverbs 3:5-6 and Matthew 6:33.)
One good thing to note is that if you were not TRAINED properly, you can TURN your life around. One of the definitions of ‘turn’ is ‘to change or alter the course of’. God does allow U-turns. Turning back to Him is also a great course to follow. There are U-turns in the MAP. See the book of Jonah for more info.
Prayer:
WOW! Praise you Lord for the words from Your Word and Your Spirit. May it be used to Your glory, and to further Your Kingdom. Lord, I thank You for Your ways, which are definitely higher than my ways. I thank you for Your plans for my life, and those whom I love. Help me to help equip the ‘next generation’ of Your children (physical children and spiritual children). Help me to dig into your “Map of Life”, and let Your Word become ‘common knowledge’ in me. Encourage me as I encourage others to choose your path of righteousness. Thank You Lord for all Your many benefits and blessings that You have given and will give to us, most of all being the life of Your precious Son Jesus, and it is in His name that I pray all these things and more. AMEN!

Day 23: October 23rd - - Deuteronomy 30:16

I command you today to love the Lord your God, to do what he wants you to do, and to keep his commands, his rules, and his laws. Then you will live and grow in number, and the Lord your God will bless you in the land you are entering to take as your own. Deuteronomy 30:16 NCV
I thank God for His servants that are obedient, and speak His Words of truth. I am blessed to be a ‘chosen’ one of God, and I am attending a Conference this weekend called Outpour. We are praying for an outpouring of the Spirit of God, to help us walk as the ‘chosen’ ones of God. The guest speaker moves in the prophetic evangelism anointing, and he is an amazing man of God. For those of you who are attending the conference too, take notes, and listen to the words of the Lord. He will speak to you through the Pastor, and new revelations will come to you during this time as well. You can live a ‘chosen’ lifestyle too – it all comes down to making the right choices. But as this verse also says, part of those right choices include; loving God, obeying God, & listening to God’s voice. He promises that we will live and multiply (grow in number in NCV). This does not just mean ‘babies’, it is your spiritual children too. The people you lead to Christ, also fit into this category. Are you multiplying the kingdom?? WOW! I am totally excited about this conference, not with hype or those feelings of the moment, but for the message of truth that will be shared. The Bible tells us that ‘many are called, but few are chosen’ (Matthew 22:14 NKJV). Even if you do not have a personal relationship with the Father, He is still YOUR God. We are all called to follow Him. However, several of us do not feel worthy of the calling, and turn away from God. But there are a select few that choose God, and choose to be ‘chosen’.
If YOU do not know Jesus as your personal friend, brother, and Saviour then please do not hesitate any further. Take that step today - - It’s as simple as A.B.C., and it only takes a moment, to change your life forever. If you so desire, you can re-commit your life to Him as well too ~ it's never too late, while you are alive anyway.
A - - Admit to God you are a sinner, and repent and turn away from your sin.
B - - Believe that Jesus is the Son of God and He gave His life for you and me.
C- - Confess your faith in Jesus as your Saviour and your Lord forevermore.
This simple prayer will change you from the inside out.
The verse today says, ‘the Lord your God will bless you in the land you are entering to take as your own.’ Do you want to be blessed? Do you want to receive more blessings, in the new places you are entering… the changes you are making in your life? I sure do. This verse reminds us of the greatest commandment, to love the Lord with all our heart, our soul, our mind and our strength. Loving God means obeying Him, listening to Him, and putting Him first in your life. Those are tough to live out, but they are possible. We have a ‘cloud of witnesses’ standing by cheering us on. All things are possible to him who believes. We know that Jesus has the ultimate victory, and because He has risen, we can rise above all our failures too. He gives us the peace to go through each day, no matter what storms may rise. Please listen to the song below, and let it sink deep into your mind and spirit. Remember that you are an over-comer too. Rise on wings like eagles today, and take time to fall on your knees to praise Him. (No excuses, as the pastor tonight said, if it’s too hard to kneel, and you are good at making excuses why you can’t, then just lay prostrate and worship Him.)
‘I Will Rise’ by Chris Tomlin – ‘Jesus has overcome, and the grave is overwhelmed. The victory is won. He has risen from the dead. And I will rise when He calls my name. No more sorrow, no more pain. I will rise on eagles wings, before my God, fall on my knees and rise. I will rise!’
Prayer: Hallelujah God! Father we thank You that we are over-comers with Jesus, and that we can rise on eagles wings. We can run and not grow weary, we can walk and not faint, if only we wait on You. Help us to set aside weaknesses or selfish thoughts of embarrassment, and allow us to seek You on our knees, or laying prostrate, knowing that You will come and speak with us. Help us live the life of a ‘chosen’ one. Thank You Lord for choosing us, and for allowing us the choice to choose You as well. Help my friends and family who may be walking in doubt and unbelief. Let them pray the simple ABC prayer, to start changing their life today. Convict by the power of Your Holy Spirit. I ask You to bless the rest of the Outpour Conference, and the guest speaker, the worship team, the host pastors, and their church, and all the attendees. Come outpour Your Spirit and anointing as we walk the paths You have laid out for Your ‘chosen’ ones. Bless the rest of the weekend conferences as well, and the Grand opening service of The Sanctuary Worship Centre. We ask all these things in the name of JESUS, AMEN!

But as this verse also says, part of those right choices include; loving God, obeying God, & listening to God’s voice. He promises that we will live and multiply (grow in number in NCV). This does not just mean ‘babies’, it is your spiritual children too. The people you lead to Christ, also fit into this category. Are you multiplying the kingdom?? WOW! I am totally excited about this conference, not with hype or those feelings of the moment, but for the message of truth that will be shared. The Bible tells us that ‘many are called, but few are chosen’ (Matthew 22:14 NKJV). Even if you do not have a personal relationship with the Father, He is still YOUR God. We are all called to follow Him. However, several of us do not feel worthy of the calling, and turn away from God. But there are a select few that choose God, and choose to be ‘chosen’.
If YOU do not know Jesus as your personal friend, brother, and Saviour then please do not hesitate any further. Take that step today - - It’s as simple as A.B.C., and it only takes a moment, to change your life forever. If you so desire, you can re-commit your life to Him as well too ~ it's never too late, while you are alive anyway.
A - - Admit to God you are a sinner, and repent and turn away from your sin.
B - - Believe that Jesus is the Son of God and He gave His life for you and me.
C- - Confess your faith in Jesus as your Saviour and your Lord forevermore.
This simple prayer will change you from the inside out.
The verse today says, ‘the Lord your God will bless you in the land you are entering to take as your own.’ Do you want to be blessed? Do you want to receive more blessings, in the new places you are entering… the changes you are making in your life? I sure do. This verse reminds us of the greatest commandment, to love the Lord with all our heart, our soul, our mind and our strength. Loving God means obeying Him, listening to Him, and putting Him first in your life. Those are tough to live out, but they are possible. We have a ‘cloud of witnesses’ standing by cheering us on. All things are possible to him who believes. We know that Jesus has the ultimate victory, and because He has risen, we can rise above all our failures too. He gives us the peace to go through each day, no matter what storms may rise. Please listen to the song below, and let it sink deep into your mind and spirit. Remember that you are an over-comer too. Rise on wings like eagles today, and take time to fall on your knees to praise Him. (No excuses, as the pastor tonight said, if it’s too hard to kneel, and you are good at making excuses why you can’t, then just lay prostrate and worship Him.)

Prayer: Hallelujah God! Father we thank You that we are over-comers with Jesus, and that we can rise on eagles wings. We can run and not grow weary, we can walk and not faint, if only we wait on You. Help us to set aside weaknesses or selfish thoughts of embarrassment, and allow us to seek You on our knees, or laying prostrate, knowing that You will come and speak with us. Help us live the life of a ‘chosen’ one. Thank You Lord for choosing us, and for allowing us the choice to choose You as well. Help my friends and family who may be walking in doubt and unbelief. Let them pray the simple ABC prayer, to start changing their life today. Convict by the power of Your Holy Spirit. I ask You to bless the rest of the Outpour Conference, and the guest speaker, the worship team, the host pastors, and their church, and all the attendees. Come outpour Your Spirit and anointing as we walk the paths You have laid out for Your ‘chosen’ ones. Bless the rest of the weekend conferences as well, and the Grand opening service of The Sanctuary Worship Centre. We ask all these things in the name of JESUS, AMEN!

Day 12: October 12th, 2009 - - Deuteronomy 32:46-47

They are not just idle words for you—they are your life. By them you will live long in the land you are crossing the Jordan to possess.’"Deuteronomy 32:46-47 NIV

Idle words - - - we are all guilty of using idle words. We will be judged for each idle word that we use. God’s Word is not full of idle words, as it says in the Scripture. God’s Words are life, and give life. If we are to follow Christ’s example, our words need to be filled with life too. In a previous devotion, we discussed using words of life. But this is an important issue that God wants us to seriously pursue and understand. This Scripture in Deuteronomy says, ‘Take to heart all the words I have solemnly declared to you… so that you may command your children to obey carefully all the words of this law.’ Children here, does not just mean children as we know it. It refers to the next generation, which in some cases is the children, yes, but also the next generation of believers. New believers, and others ‘behind’ us, need to recognize the truths found in the Word of God. They need to start declaring the promises found in the Word, and they need to start declaring words of life. We do too!
Jesus said, ‘I am the WAY, the TRUTH, and the LIFE’ and He meant it. He is the way to get to God, the only truth in this world, and He gave us eternal life. We need to speak words of life, success & positive thinking, not words of death, failure and negativity. God is so amazing that He has shown us time and again that we need to take Him at His Word.
A funny yet, God moment, happened this weekend for me and my family. This Thanksgiving we sat down to play a family game, Phase 10 (the new version, Phase 10 Twist). My Dad was tired of runs of 7 and runs of 8, and he was now on runs of 9, and he was complaining about having to get another run. I told him that we have to be positive, and speak words of life (as I am trying to practice since one of my last devotionals). My husband told him, “hey, maybe you can get 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12 and then you can say, ‘In your face Mark’.” Well, we only have 10 cards, so we said we couldn’t get 12, just 10. So I proceeded to shuffle, and deal 10 cards to each player (or so I thought). The game began again - - my Dad was to the left of me, so he got to start the round. He picked up a card, and then proceeded to lay down, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, & 12 and then he discarded and went out to end the round We all stopped and laughed, but then thanked the Lord for his example of speaking Words of Life. We even took a picture of his cards and a video of him saying ‘In your face Mark’. I still say that I didn’t deal him 12 cards, but we all know that God can work in mysterious ways. We are all trying to speak words of life now, and know that God will prove faithful if we are obedient and faithful as well.
The Bible says in another scripture, “From the fruit of his mouth a man's stomach is filled; with the harvest from his lips he is satisfied. The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit.” (Proverbs 18:20 & 21 NIV) We need to control our tongue. Again, from the Scripture, God’s Word of truth states, “My brothers and sisters, not many of you should become teachers, because you know that we who teach will be judged more strictly. We all make many mistakes. If people never said anything wrong, they would be perfect and able to control their entire selves, too. When we put bits into the mouths of horses to make them obey us, we can control their whole bodies. Also a ship is very big, and it is pushed by strong winds. But a very small rudder controls that big ship, making it go wherever the pilot wants. It is the same with the tongue. It is a small part of the body, but it brags about great things. A big forest fire can be started with only a little flame. And the tongue is like a fire. It is a whole world of evil among the parts of our bodies. The tongue spreads its evil through the whole body. The tongue is set on fire by hell, and it starts a fire that influences all of life. People can tame every kind of wild animal, bird, reptile, and fish, and they have tamed them, but no one can tame the tongue. It is wild and evil and full of deadly poison. We use our tongues to praise our Lord and Father, but then we curse people, whom God made like himself. Praises and curses come from the same mouth! My brothers and sisters, this should not happen. Do good and bad water flow from the same spring? My brothers and sisters, can a fig tree make olives, or can a grapevine make figs? No! And a well full of salty water cannot give good water." James 3:1-12 NCV Another scripture says, ‘Out of the heart the mouth speaks’, (Luke 6:44-45) – “Each tree is recognized by its own fruit. People do not pick figs from thornbushes, or grapes from briers. The good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and the evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For out of the overflow of his heart his mouth speaks.” The old saying, GIGO (Garbage In, Garbage Out) comes into play here. What you put into your mind, goes into your heart, and eventually comes back out your mouth. EEEEK!
The tongue is a deadly weapon. The Bible again says in Jeremiah, “Their tongue is a deadly arrow; it speaks with deceit. With his mouth each speaks cordially to his neighbor, but in his heart he sets a trap for him.” (Jerm 9:8) WOW! Makes you think before you speak doesn’t it? We all (including myself) need to do a lot more of that. Thinking before we speak, and we also need to be real. There is a saying that goes around, “I may have to love you, but I don’t have to like you”. It makes me think of the last part of this verse, when it is used negatively. People can pretend to be your friend, and to talk nicely to you, but then go and deceive you behind your back, trying to trick you into talking bad about other people, which they go in turn and tell what you've said, looking like the 'good guy'. I know a lot of this goes on in the world today, and it needs to stop. I know that I have gotten caught in many a trap, but no more. Jesus has the victory, I have Jesus, so therefore I have the victory! Say that twice aloud so that you engrave it in your mind and your heart! What power there is in positive thinking... but what power there is in our Lord and Saviour & His Holy Spirit!
Walk in the freedom, and the victory that you have received. Praise you Lord!
PRAYER: Father God, we pray to You now in the name of Jesus to help us with our tongues. You have given them to us, to speak words of positivity, life and encouragement. Help us by the power of Your Spirit to change our minds, hearts, and our tongues consciously and sub-consciously to thoughts of You and Your Words and truth. Thank you Lord for setting us free. Thank you Lord that we have the victory through Your Son, and we no longer have to conform to this world, but that we can be transformed by Your power and Your power alone. Guide us in the steps we should take, and the words we should say. Let us speak Your words of truth to the hurting people of this world. Let us be Your ambassadors, and speak the Words of the King. In Jesus’ Name I pray, AMEN!
